How to Find the Best Music Download Service for Your iPhone

Just what is it about the iPhone that appeals so greatly? My son has one and it is all he seems to talk about! He is well into mobile phones of all sorts and so tends to have his finger on the pulse of most such issues. Apparently iPhone units are shifting off the shelves at a tremendous rate. I asked him what the appeal was. Read on for the results of what I suppose might be called an “interview”:

What is the initial appeal?
“It has loads of things going for it that other phones do not have.”

Such as?
“Well, let's see...You don't have to use buttons. You can touch the screen to do whatever you want instead and the quality of the display is brilliant. No grey icons here – full colour! (At this point I did wonder about greasy fingers all over a small screen, but he persisted). The screen has to be the biggest there has been than any other mobile phone. You can watch films (movies for our American friends) on it or videos that you might make on it.

The thought of watching films on a mobile phone intrigued me, but apparently there was more to come – I could connect to the internet on it!

So how does it connect to the internet?
“By a WiFi connection. Think of all those places like coffee shops and so on that you could hook up to. You could then use a browser on your phone almost as if you were at your PC or laptop. Then there is what the iPhone is often spoken of as being famous for – music.”

Music? Surely not that poor quality stuff often heard on public transport?
“No, quality music. Just like an iPod, you can listen to your tunes on the move – a far cry from the older mobile phone stuff. You can just join a website that lets you legally download music for a subscription fee (legal generally not only covers legality, but often means spyware, adware and virus free too), download and enjoy the sounds in a quality player – the iPhone.”

So downloading music for the iPhone is that easy?
“Yes, but you have to think not only about the legality of the site, but also fundamental things like does the site actually have a big download list to choose from and do they actually have music that I would want to listen to? Look for sites that break the downloads into different listening categories such as rock, pop, classical, country and western or whatever genre you are into.”

Do I need any prior knowledge to do the downloading?
“Not really, except you need to make sure the downloading process is clear – easy to follow, easy to carry out and easy to move between folders and other files. Do the resulting files need unzipping and do you have the right software to deal with the type of compression used (if any). You want to make sure they have a fast download speed too. The last thing you want is to spend hours attempting to download a single file! It will partly depend on your own connection speed of course.”

What if it all goes terribly wrong? How do I get sorted out?
“You can always talk to me, but another important aspect is to check that the site has a good support system in place just in case there are any issues like that. How fast are they likely to respond? How easy is it to make contact? In general, if you consider all of these points, you won't go far wrong.”

Well, that was it and we moved on to other topics, but it has left me looking at my old phone with a distinct feeling of dissatisfaction in favour of the iPhone and gigabytes of music downloads!
