Syncing Through your iPhone

What is “syncing” your iPhone all about? What does it mean? As soon as you start your iPhone you are invited to start the synchronization process. If you have had experience using an iPod, you are likely to see some familiarity.

Synchronization is all about matching changes between your iPhone and your computer starting with synchronizing your contacts and the options of doing the same with website bookmarks, emails and calendar events. These are the basic syncing events that you might expect, but in addition, music, videos and movies can be synchronized too. Although it can be an automatic process, you do have the opportunity to control what is and what isn't synced. Click on the tabs on the upper right corner of your screen if you want to control these things yourself.

Synchronizing your calendar, contacts and email: The built in management system will automatically take care of these for you, but if you would like to exercise control, then just click the “Info” icon. This will enable you to do two things 1) See what has already been synchronized, and 2) To change what is synchronized and what isn't. As part of that process, you will be able to view all the iTunes listings held on your computer. Just click the appropriate tick boxes. Then click “Apply”.

Music synchronization: Know your limits! Music tracks have a habit of eating up your storage space. With the later iPhone 3G it is not the same problem as the earlier iPhone models that started out with just 4GB of storage space. The iPhone 3G (at the time of writing) can be expanded up to 16GB which should be ample for a reasonable mobile music collection. The suggestion is simply to be choosy about the tracks synced to your iPhone. Again, click the appropriate tab and apply

Synchronization of your photographs and videos: Again, clicking the appropriate tab (photos) provides you with access to synchronizing your photographs. In a similar manner to selecting the music that you want to have on your iPhone, consider the memory that the photos and/or videos are occupying and only sync those that you really want to include. Click apply to put them into place.
